Showing Up for Our Communities
Since 1996, the Academy for Professional Excellence has worked alongside the people who show up for their communities every day. We support everyone from frontline social workers and case managers to the supervisors and executives who guide them. We’re a project of the San Diego State University School of Social Work, and our purpose hasn’t changed since day one: help people do work that matters, and help them do it well. Each year, more than 50,000 people turn to us for learning and development, from county agencies across Southern California and well beyond.
Our approach is what sets us apart. We ground every program in culturally responsive, recovery-oriented practice — because real change has to reach the heart and the hands, not just the head. Learners leave with abilities they have already practiced, and the confidence to use them right away.

Core Values
Culturally Responsive Practice
Culturally responsive practices shape everything we build. Every community carries its own history and strengths, and we design for that from the start. We co-design with partners and communities, and our facilitators bring lived experience alongside deep professional expertise.
We hold ourselves to the same standard inside the organization. That means looking honestly at our own habits and systems, and changing them when the people we serve need us to.
