Tonya Brown, BSW

Ms. Brown received her Bachelor Degree in Social Work from San Diego State University of in 2001. In 1995, Ms. Brown certified as a Substance Abuse Counselor from San Diego State University SPAN Program.

Ms. Brown has worked in Driving under the Influence Program (DUIP) at the MAAC Project, East County Accord, and San Diego State Driving under the Influence Program (SDSUDUIP) for 10 years as a Substance Abuse Counselor and Educator. Also during that time Ms. Brown worked in PC1000 Drug Diversion Program for Mid City and East County Accord for 2 years as a Substance Abuse Counselor and Educator.

Ms. Brown assisted the SPAN Program Director as an intern to set up sober living homes locally from 1993-1994. Ms. Brown participated in another Internship at Harmony Women’s Recovery Center in 1991-1992.

Ms. Brown has specialized in the area of child abuse since 2002 as a Senior Protective Service Worker for the Department of Social Services 2002-2010. From there, she transitioned to a Protective Services Supervisor. Ms. Brown has worked in Child Welfare Services for 15 years in four programs including Continuing Services, Voluntary Services, Emergency Response, and Court Intervention. As a Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor she has frequently utilized this expertise with many of our families.

Ms. Brown participated in two Pilot Programs, one with the Agency moving to the Cluster model and one with the Santee Sheriff’s Department whereby I was on call five days a week for approximately one year. Ms. Brown graduated after one year in the Future Leader Series.

In 2010 Ms. Brown created a specialized training on Understanding the 12 Steps and currently trains her co-workers in order to assist them with their casework.
