HIV/AIDS: Basics and Beyond

Intended Audience: This course meets the requirements of the California Board of Behavioral Sciences for LCSW’s and MFT’s who are renewing their licenses. Staff who are working with families wherein AIDS and/or HIV is present, and who want to expand their knowledge and skill in understanding and intervening with this population

Intended Objectives:

• Provide information on characteristics and psychosocial issues of people living with HIV and AIDS
• Provide information on method of assessment and treatment of people living with HIV and AIDS
• Provide information on the legal and ethical issues which interact with HIV and AIDS
• Provide information on the cultural relationship to HIV

Topics Include:

• Course of illness and manifestations of the disease
• Its impact on the individual, family and community
• Countertransference reactions for the professional
• Values clarification
• Epidemiological trends
• Current treatments
• Working effectively with the family

2.18 Student understands the medical, legal, and social management needs of the child with HIV disease, drug dependency, and medically fragile child. The student helps foster and birth families in meeting those needs and in coping with the stresses of such care.
