Evidence-based Assessment and Interventions with Perpetrators of Intimate Partner Violence

Intended Audience: Supervisors and social workers wishing to update knowledge and practice skills in working with perpetrators of intimate partner violence

Intended Objectives:

• Identify potential transference/countertransference issues in working with perpetrators of Intimate Partner Violence
• Describe distinctions and typologies of violence within Intimate Partner Violence relationships
• Identify the “typologies” of perpetrators from research on batterers of Intimate Partner Violence
• Understand effective interview techniques with perpetrators of Intimate Partner Violence
• Identify criteria for making effective case planning recommendations including treatment options for perpetrators of Intimate Partner Violence
• Identify assessment techniques that demonstrate perpetrator progress in treatment as related to a case plan goals

• Review of the basic dynamics of Intimate Partner Violence (Power & Control, Cycle of Violence) and how affect assessment & interventions with perpetrator
• Self of the Social Worker: How transference/countertransference may affect effectively working with perpetrators of Intimate Partner Violence
• Cultural considerations in working with perpetrators of Intimate Partner Violence
• Evidenced based assessment regarding distinct types of Intimate Partner Violence
• Evidenced based Intimate Partner Violence perpetrator typologies and how this data may inform child welfare interventions and effective case planning
• Batterers Intervention Programs (BIP): An evidenced based understanding treatment and interventions available to perpetrators of Intimate Partner Violence as well as knowledge about these programs to assist with effective evaluation if the perpetrator is making progress towards change
